Where you start

Angourie Surfing Reserve

Same start as the full coastal walk. Finish needs a pickup in Brooms Head or a booked camp at Lake Arragan / Red Cliff.

How to get there

  1. Two-car shuffle: Angourie reserve + Brooms Head village, or book Lake Arragan / Red Cliff and stop short.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Low-tide rock platforms only. Official note: if the tide is high, use the diversion track midway along Back Beach (look for the tall post).
  2. Give Red Cliff / Lake Arragan cliffs a wide berth.
  3. Start early enough to finish in daylight. This is a full day, not a short evening walk.

Who this day is for

Official first coastal-walk segment: 18 km one-way, Grade 4, 6–7 hours. This is how most people sample the 65 km walk without booking four nights.

You need a Brooms Head pickup, a booked Lake Arragan / Red Cliff stop, or the fitness to reverse 18 km. High-tide note: use the diversion track midway along Back Beach (look for the tall post).

Red Cliff / Lake Arragan

The official segment passes Lake Arragan country. Cliffs are unstable — stay well back, do not stand or sit on the rock, supervise children. The view still works from a safe setback.

Direction and sun

Best walked north to south with the sun at your back — same rule as the full coastal walk. Start early enough to finish in daylight. Extra food if swell closes beach sections even at low tide.

Extra tips

  • This segment is how most people sample the coastal walk.
  • Check live alerts before you assume the Angourie end is open.

Often paired with Coastal walk (65 km)— only if energy and weather allow.
